Witness tearfully testifies at aerial spraying hearings

Below is a press release sent by IDIS, a environemntal group in Davao that is monitoring the marathon hearings on the injunction being sought by the banana companies against aerial spraying:

DAVAO CITY — A witness of the city government in the ongoing battle over aerial spraying against the big banana aggrupation Pilipino Banana Growers and Exporters Association (PBGEA) twice broke into tears in Tuesday?s hearing at the regional trial court branch 17.

Cecelia Moran, a resident of barangay Dacudao in Calinan District, became emotional when she was being questioned by presiding Judge Renato Fuentes himself before the hearing adjourned.

Filipinos in US urge support for family amendments in immigration bill

WASHINGTON — With the U.S. Senate poised to vote on a compromise immigration reform bill (S.1348) next week, the National Federation of Filipino American Associations has joined other civil rights organizations in calling for improvements to the measure as a condition for supporting it.

Filipinos in NY hold health fair

HEALTH FAIR ASSERTS THE BASIC HUMAN RIGHT OF FILIPINO MIGRANT WORKERS

New York, NY ? On Sunday, June 3rd, Filipino doctors of the University of the Philippines Medical Alumni Society in America (UPMASA) and members of DAMAYAN Migrant Workers Association spearheaded a collaboration to bridge community health disparities by linking highly skilled professionals and marginalized domestic workers through Ang Kalusugan ay Karapatang Pang-tao (Health is a Basic Human Right) Health Fair. Over 150 individuals availed of the free services.

“We are excited about this project,” stated Dr. Lou Publico, President-elect of the NY-NJ-CT UPMASA Chapter, “We hope to respond to the needs of our kababayans [compatriots] who may have difficulty in basic health screening services.”
