Philippines: Malacanang dismisses rumors of Cabinet revamp

MANILA — Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita dismissed today as the product of “curious minds” rumors of an impending revamp of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo?s Cabinet following the May 14 mid-term elections.

In his weekly press briefing in Malaca?ang this afternoon, Ermita surmised that speculations on possible changes in the Cabinet were being floated by people curious to know who would be appointed to replace Cabinet members who ran in last month?s polls.

Arroyo returns tomorrow from 3-nation visits

MANILA — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo returns Thursday afternoon from her six-day official and working visits to the Vatican City, Portugal and China.

The Presidential entourage is expected to fly in at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 2 in Pasay City at 3:25 p.m. on board a chartered Philippine Airlines (PAL) Flight PR-001.

Arroyo to 14th Congress: Prioritize bill on human rights victims

MANILA — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is renewing her call to the incoming 14th Congress to prioritize the passage of a bill that would provide compensation to victims of human rights violations during the martial law regime, Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita announced today.

The President, for the second time, certified as urgent Senate Bill No. 1745, otherwise known as the Human Rights Victims Compensation Act of 2004, Ermita said.

Poor families in Davao City, ComVal top payers of livelihood loan

DAVAO CITY — Poor families in Davao City Poblacion and District 2 in Compostela Valley are the winners in paying loans provided through the Self-Employment Assistance Kaunlaran Program (SEA-K) of the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

Arlene L. Morpus, DSWD project development officer revealed that Davao City Poblacion East and West tied with ComVal?s Maco, Mabini, Nabunturan and Mawab at a high 95% repayment rate.

Girl Scouts in Davao Norte has hard time enlisting members

TAGUM CITY—-Girls Scout Davao del Norte Council is finding it hard to recruit and renew members this school opening as most Parents-Teachers Community Associations (PTCAs) have refused to get payments for Girls Scout membership during enrolment.

Leah Joy Gonzaga, council executive in an interview, said the council has felt this problem especially in Tagum City where PTCAs are no longer requiring enrollees to pay Girls Scout membership fees.
