Woodside, New York ? Anakbayan NY/NJ, the local Filipino American youth advocacy group, took it upon themselves last Saturday to inform the Filipino community on the Felisa Garcia case. They sponsored a full investigation for the unexplained death of Felisa “Fely” Garcia, 58, a Filipina domestic caregiver who died from an alleged suicide last March 14 in the Bronx.

Philippines: Comelec Urged to Stop Dilly-Dallying on Fake Partylists

MANILA — Anakpawis Representative and political detainee today said that the Commission on Elections should stop dilly-dallying on the issue of fake and government-funded party-lists and take action to immediately disqualify these.

Group Outraged by Beating of Filipina Student in New York Bus

NEW YORK, NY, April 20, 2007 — FIND, Inc. is appalled at the nightmarish event that occurred on March 14, 2007 as a Filipina Catholic-school girl was heavily beaten on a New York City MTA bus and was further ignored by the bus driver who insensitively told her to “Go talk to a priest.” 17-year old Marie Stefanie Martinez was attacked by 13 African American teenagers after stepping onto a B82 bus in Brooklyn. After being taunted, being called a “Chink” and being pushed around, Martinez finally decided to fight back and that is when things took a turn for the worse.

US, Australia Warn of Terror Attacks in Philippines

The United States has issued an advisory to its citizens in the Philippines to reconsider traveling to certain parts of the country, particularly Central Mindanao. “The Embassy has information that a terrorist group may be planning to carry out bombing attacks in central Mindanao over the next several days,” said the advisory from the US embassy in Manila.

Australia, meanwhile, issued today a similar advisory, strongly urging its citizens not to travel to Mindanao and other parts of the country.

Philippines: ‘A vote for Bayan Muna is a vote against political killings’

Dear kababayan,

The May 14 elections is an opportunity for Filipinos to say NO to
extrajudicial killings. The government must respect and uphold human
rights and civil liberties, including those of critics and activists.
Genuine democracy demands respect for oppositionist and critical
voices.

As of today, 838 civilians have been slain. Among them are 130 members
of Bayan Muna, one of the groups critical of the Arroyo government,
and which champions the Politics of Change vis-a-vis traditional
politics. International and independent probes have pointed at the
Arroyo government and the military for the failure to stop the
violence and for having the motive to kill the activists.
