Continuing executions and abductions show “business as usual” for state security forces

The Philippine human rights group Karapatan today condemned the frustrated killing of its Panay Island Secretary General Jose Ely “Leeboy” Garachico, 50 years old, and the abduction of two other human rights defenders who were with him in Iloilo.

The initial report gathered by Karapatan reveals that Garachico, along with Nilo Arado of Bayan -Panay and Luisa Posa Dominado of SELDA-Panay, were traveling in Oton, Iloilo last night at around 10PM when a van overtook their vehicle and shot Garachico in the neck. The assailants then forced Arado and Dominado out of the vehicle. They have not been located until now. Garachico is receiving medical attention at the Intensive Care Unit of a local hospital.

Was ComVal Girl a Guerrilla? AFP Now Unsure

DAVAO CITY — The military on Friday appeared to have changed its position that Grecil Buya was a child combatant of the communist New People’s Army. Grecil was the nine-year-old girl from Compostela Valley who was killed during an encounter between communist rebels and soldiers on March 31 and whom the military earlier tagged as a member of the New People’s Army.

Instead, the military, which earlier said that soldiers were forced to shoot and kill Grecil because she allegedly had a firearm, now says it was not even sure whether the soldiers or the rebels shot the girl.

Philippines: BIR’s Bunag Tells Davao Grads to Dream

DAVAO CITY — In powder blue toga, the 460 boys and girls ages 16 to 17 who belong to the 58th graduating high school students of the Ateneo de Davao University were honored by the presence of Bureau of Internal Revenue Commissioner Jose Mario C. Bunag as their commencement speaker and disclosed to them the plans of his bureau for the youth.

Bunag who is also a Blue Knight being a graduate of the Ateneo de Manila University came to Davao City to share his experiences and his commitment while serving the government.

San Miguel Corporation and the NutriAsia Group controlled by Joselito D. Campos today announced that San Miguel is selling its entire minority stake in joint venture company NutriAsia San Miguel Holdings Ltd. to the NutriAsia Group. NutriAsia San Miguel Holdings Ltd. owns 100% of NutriAsia Pacific Ltd. which in turn owns 84.5% of Del Monte Pacific, Ltd. (DMPL).
