Philippines: Exempt OFWs from Passport Fee — Pimentel

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Genuine Opposition senatorial candidate Aquilino Pimentel III today proposed that overseas Filipino workers be exempted from the payment of the P700 passport fee to ease their financial burden before going to their foreign destination.

Pimentel said the free passport scheme is privilege that should be extended to the OFWs to reward them for their role in stabilizing the economy in the form of foreign exchange or dollar remittances that have propped up the peso and boosted the country?s international dollar reserves.

Philippines: Death of Domestic Worker Draws an Outpour of Outrage and Support

DEATH OF DOMESTIC WORKER DRAWS AN OUTPOUR OF OUTRAGE AND SUPPORT
Hundreds Demand Action for Truth & Justice for Fely Garcia

New York City, NY ? After ten days since launching the online petition, “Truth and Justice for Domestic Worker Fely Garcia!” over 500 individuals have registered support for the case of a 58-year-old Filpina caregiver who was found dead in her Bronx, NY apartment on March 14. DAMAYAN Migrant Workers Association, a 350-members strong community based grassroots organization led by Filipino migrant domestic workers in New York City, initiated the campaign after members reported about the disturbing death of a fellow domestic worker, Felisa S. Garcia. Ms. Garcia allegedly committed suicide and left letters, one of which stated that she was abused and harassed by her employer in the Bronx.

PANABO CITY — About 50 families composed of more than 300 individuals fled their homes after a military air-strike hit Wednesday morning a banana plantation area in barangay Manay, this city.

About 15 kilometers from the poblacion, Manay was the place where the Philippine Air Force OV-10 planes dropped bombs at a banana farm where New People’s Army (NPA) rebels were seen hiding after their successful raid of a jail armory last April 8.
