Rituals at the Longhouse

The indigenous peoples of the Malaysian state of Sarawak have to contend with forces of tradition and development that often clash. The resultant cultural, economic and political stirrings are not unlike what the Lumads in Mindanao go through. Davao Today associate editor Germelina A. Lacorte, who spent weeks in Sarawak earlier this year as part of her journalism fellowship with the Southeast Asia Press Alliance, chronicles the struggles of our neighboring tribes.

Sherad Anthony Sanchez: Young and victorious

The independent digital film “Huling Baylan ng Buhi (The Last Priestess of Buhi)” by 21-year-old Davao filmmaker Sherad Anthony Sanchez won the top prizes, including best picture and best director, in this week’s Cinema One Originals competition in Manila. In an Inquirer story, Robbie Tan, the film producer who was one of the jurors, said “Huling Baylan” is ?a well-conceived symphony of sounds and images, pushing the language of cinema across new boundaries.?
