‘(In)Human Security Act to attack civil liberties’

The Bagong Alyansang Makabayan together with progressive peoples' organizations, civil libertarians and human rights group disputes the definition of terrorism in the HSA, saying it is prone to abuse by the authorities since it is too vague and broad. Who defines such terms as "widespread", "extraordinary", "panic", "populace", "unlawful" and so on? Even legitimate dissent can be interpreted as terrorism since under the HSA the definition is not limited to the Abu Sayyaf Group, Jemaah Islamiyah and Al Qaeda.

Philippines: EU court judgment ‘a victory for justice,’ says Joma

The judgment of the European Court of First Instance (ECFI) annulling the decision of the Council of the European Union (EU) to put me in the ?terrorist? blacklist is a victory for the cause of justice. It is not merely my personal victory. It is a victory for all the people, my panel of lawyers, the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) as intervenor and the International Committee–Defend. They have resolutely and vigorously supported me and fought for justice against my persecution. I take this opportunity to thank all of them.

Basilan beheadings: Dishonoring the dead

The Black & White Movement condemns in the strongest possible terms the beheading of ten marine soldiers following a firefight with members of the 8th Marine Battalion Landing Team (MBLT). DAVAO CITY, Philippines — First-district congressman Prospero Nograles, the majority floorleader of the House of Representatives and a Lakas stalwart, has been a political rival of for years of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte. Twice in the past, he ran against the popular mayor but lost.

Despite the rivalry, their relationship has been largely civil over the years. But it would seem that, beginning in last May’s election and with Duterte’s decision to field his initially reluctant daughter, Sara, to run for vice mayor in the last elections, the gloves are off.
