Only days after the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) was joined by journalists? organisations around the world in demanding the Pakistan government take action to address the appalling press freedom and journalist safety situation, the IFJ is shocked to learn of the murder of a journalist and kidnapping of another in Pakistan.
The war between the Philippine military and the communist New People's Army in Southern Mindanao has spilled over from the battlefield to the media, with both sides claiming that, in an encounter last June 7 in Compostela Valley province, each killed more than what the other was willing to admit in public.
A member of the group Mamamayan Ayaw sa Aerial Spraying (Maas), which advocates the banning of aerial spraying of pesticides on the city's banana plantations, stage a demonstration in front of the Davao City office of the Pilipino Banana Growers and Exporters Association (PBGEA), the industry group. Department of Health regional director Dr. Paulyn Rossel-Ubial bared that the region has the highest number of local government units that have been awarded with the National Sandugo Special Award that includes Tagum city, Panabo city, and the Compostela Valley Province.
