Arroyo Creates More Jobs, All Right — But Most Are for Maids

MANILA — The results of the January 2007 Labor Force Survey (LFS) showed that the number of employed Filipinos increased by 1.5 million to 33.5 million from the 32 million recorded in January 2006. But according to independent think-tank IBON Foundation, the figures are deceptive as the quality of jobs created still leaves much to be desired.

IBON research head Sonny Africa pointed out that there were four times more new jobs for maids than for factory workers, highlighting the failure of the Arroyo government to create regular and productive jobs through a genuine industrialization program.

GMO Corn Approved in RP Shows Signs of Toxicity, Study Reveals

Greenpeace demands immediate withdrawal, moratorium on GMO approvals

Manila/Berlin/Paris, 14 March 2007–A genetically-modified (GM) corn
strain approved for food, feed and processing in the Philippines shows
signs of toxicity to mammals, a new study released today reveals. The
study, and written by a panel of three independent scientists in France,
showed that laboratory rats fed with the GMO corn Monsanto (MON) 863
YieldGard Rootworm displayed kidney and liver toxicity. MON 863 is corn
genetically manipulated to produce its own insecticide called ‘modified
Cry3Bb1’ to kill rootworm insects in the soil, and contains gene coding
for antibiotic resistance.

Davao Offers Cheapest Kidney Transplant

DAVAO CITY — Kidney specialists in the city have bared that Davao offers the cheapest kidney transplant in the country today.

Dr. Franklin Guillano, a nephrologist, revealed that the city has hospitals that offer kidney transplantations for about 500,000 pesos compared to Manila’s price range from 800,000 pesos up to one million pesos.
