Philippines: Greenpeace ‘Shocked’ by Report on RP’s Climate Troubles

Greenpeace Statement on IPCC report released yesterday in Brussels:

Manila, 7 April 2007–Key findings of the new IPCC report say that:
-it is likely that climate change will induce mass extinction of species
within 60 to 70 years
-the number of people at risk from water scarcity is likely to rise from
tens of millions to billions
-reductions in food production capacity in the poorest parts of the
world, are projected
-small islands, subsaharan Africa, Asian mega deltas and the Arctic
regions are the most vulnerable, and
-huge numbers of people will be at risk due to sea level rise, storm
surges, and river flooding in the Asian mega deltas.

Greenpeace demands urgent action as costs to threaten millions of Filipinos

MANILA — The Philippines is on its way to a major climate
change catastrophe–that is, unless the government takes urgent and
ambitious action to avert a disaster that will put millions of Filipinos
at risk. Greenpeace issued the warning today during the release of
never-before seen maps that illustrate the extent of climate change
impacts on the archipelago. The group additionally called for strong
measures to mitigate the worst effects of climate change to help the
country avoid certain disaster.

Greenpeace Hits DA for Flip-Flop on GMO Corn

The environment group Greenpeace today lambasted the Department of Agriculture for allegedly flip-flopping on an earlier order revoking the authorization for the use of a genetically modified corn called MON863, which the group has found to be toxic. Mindanao is the country’s largest corn producer where many of these GMOs have been cultivated.

Davao’s ‘Green Vote’ Hopes to Make a Difference

Although the Green Vote campaign recognizes Davao City’s efforts to protect the environment, the groups behind it insist more drastic actions are needed to realize these goals. Good governance, they say, plays a key role in protecting the environment. They blame corruption for much of the environmental destruction.
