Bourgeois Journalism vs Alternative Journalism in the Philippines

There are two theories that define the state of the Philippine press today ? the bourgeois theory and the progressive theory. The bourgeois theory of the press retains its domination of the industry but with a new breed of owners and stockholders belonging to new wealthy families. The author read this paper at a conference of the College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP) in Dumaguete City on April 14.

Any discussion about the theories of the press, to make them relevant to Philippine realities, should always be taken in the context of the social, economic and political conditions in a given historical period. Today, the continuing political crisis, armed conflict and even the state of rebellion are also manifested or mirrored in the state of the Philippine press.

Military and police further harassing peasants

The militant Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) and its regional chapter SAGUPA-SB lambasted the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) particularly the 34th Infantry Battalion and Mayor Mateo Biong of Giporos town in Eastern Samar for lying to the media that there was no mass evacuation of at least 80 families from Barangay Huknan.

Philippines: Bird Flu Is a Children?s Concern, Says Unicef

DAVAO CITY — Bird Flu is a children?s concern, which has prompted the United Nations Children?s Fund to join the information drive to keep the Philippines free from the pandemic and save the Filipino children.

Nilo Yacat, an information officer from UNICEF Philippines in a seminar workshop with Philippine Information Agency (PIA) information officers, bared the extent of harm that the Avian Influenza (AI) had done to children population.

He said one-half of the reported cases and one-third of the reported deaths worldwide due to AI, were children.

Philippines: ‘We are in Great Pain’ — Missing Activist’s Family

Just recently, on March 28, I gave 30 stems of red roses to my wife symbolizing our 30 years of marriage amidst arduous struggle for democracy. Through thick and thin, we have marched together, with our people, for 37 years in their fight for liberation.

Would this be about to come to an end? For last night (April 12), agents of the state under the Arroyo regime forcibly abducted my wife and Nilo Arado of BAYAN. They shot Leeboy Garachico of KARAPATAN, in the neck and left him for dead.
