Davao’s Joselito Cayetano Was Still a Candidate

May. 14, 2007

DAVAO CITY Joselito Peter Cayetano, the namesake of opposition senatorial candidate Alan Peter Cayetano, was still a candidate for senator, according to Eva Antipuesto, the assistant superintendent of the Department of Educations division office here.

Antipuesto quoted a Comelec memorandum from Manila that she received as at 9 am today, saying that you are hereby directed to inform all chairman and members of the Board of Election Inspectors that Joselito Cayetano is still a candidate on the May 14, 2007, elections and maybe validly voted for by reason of the foregoing.

The Dep ED circulated the Comelec instruction school to school.

The Comelec memorandum also provided instructions that should the family name Cayetano be written in the ballot, “the vote will be considered stray.” The Comelec memo instructs, however, that the names Alan, Alan Peter would be considered valid for Alan Peter Cayteno while Joselito would be considered a vote for Joselito Cayetano.

Joselito Cayetano, a former dock worker in Davao City, ran for senator under the Kilusang Bagong Lipunan. Alan Peter Cayetano has alleged that Joselito was fielded in order to frustrate his bid for the senate because he has been critical of the Arroyo administration. (davaotoday.com)
