Child advocates to hold rally today for Grecil

Jun. 19, 2007

DAVAO CITY Karapatan Southern Mindanao, along with children’s rights advocate, will be staging an indignation rally here today to demand justice for Grecil Buya Galacio, the girl killed allegedly by the military in New Bataan, Compostella Valley Province, last March 31.

The human rights alliance is one with all individuals and institutions in seeking justice for Grecil Buya, along with other children who have been victimized by the government’s campaign against insurgency that has obviously turned into stupidity.

“We call the attention of government agencies to fight and vowed to push for the incarceration of those proven liable to such grave violence and disrespect against children,” Karla Hyasmind Apat, spokesperson of KARAPATAN Southern Mindanao said.

The Karapatan human rights alliance is alarmed over the incident happened to Grecil Galacio which apparently shows the continuing human rights violations to civilians particularly to children committed by one of the most notorious military unit in Compostella Valley Province –101st Infantry Brigade under the commandership of Brigadier General Carlos Holganza of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

“The unabated military operations and the harassment of children are part of the Arroyo government’s intensified counter-insurgency campaign in the hinterlands. The state security forces are making mincemeat out of our sacred rights and freedoms. It is apparent that Arroyo administration cannot rule and govern without resorting to peaceful methods. Mrs. Arroyo has even chosen to silence her critics on various combinations: on the sly, with impunity, and blatantly,” Apat said.

“We our opposed over the relentless military presence and operations hounding the civilian populace both in urban and in the hinterlands, thus calling for the immediate pull-out of government troops and genuinely address the root-causes of insurgency instead,” Apat added.

Apat furthered that the ongoing military operations and troop deployments continue to terrorize civilian communities and in effect curtail human rights in the area particularly of children. The Commission on Human Rights (CHR), she said to urgently review its investigation and provide concrete actions to the killing of Grecil.

Karapatan Southern Mindanao along with child-focused organization seeks justice for Grecil Buya Galacio and for other children who have been victimized and suffered AFP’s brutality.###
