Bulawan festival goes ‘green’
DAVAO CITY–Greening will take center stage in this year’s celebration of Bulawan Festival as some 500,000 trees will simultaneously be planted all over the province of Compostela Valley.
Guesting in Kapihan sa PIA (Philippine Information Agency), Compostela Valley Board Member Augusto Blanco Jr. shared that this year’s Bulawan Festival focuses on environment concern in the light of calamities particularly landslide incidents happening in the province.
Bearing the theme, “ComVal Shines at 14, Going Green,” this year’s Bulawan Festival tasks the municipal governments to identify an area where residents can take part in the simultaneously tree-planting activity that will take place on March 6 as part of the week-long celebration that will run from March 3 to March 8.
Serving as the action officer of this year’s Bulawan Festival celebration, Blanco said the activity will also be soliciting participation from the small-scale and large-scale mining groups, schools and from the ranks of government employees of national line agencies based in the province.
Identified planting sites for national government employees are barangays Magsaysay, Linda, Libasan and Sasa—all in the municipality of Nabunturan..
In the same forum, Provincial Agriculturist Dr. Rolando Simene said that seedlings of forest trees and fruit trees will be used as planting materials during the simultaneously tree planting activity.
Specific varieties will include Mahogany, Palcatam Narra, Acacia, and Mangium and all types of fruit trees and high value trees particularly rubber, cacao and coffee will be planted.
Meanwhile, a fun-run dubbed as Bulawan Fun Run 2012 Kalinga sa Kabataan which serves as the opening salvo of the Bulawan Festival 2012 is targeted to bring in 7,000 participants from various sectors of the community.
Blanco appealed for interested participants to join as proceeds of which will go to the Kalinga sa Kabataan school projects for classroom building construction , school chairs and tables. (PIA 11)
