Coro Obcento grabs supremacy in Himig Handog’s folk, sacred music categories

TAGUM CITY–It was their angelic voices that left an indelible mark in the audience and their twin victory has etched a mark in the history of Musikahan sa Tagum Festival.

Cheers erupted in the New City Hall Atrium as Sta. Mesa, Manila’s Coro Obcento got twin gold-victories in the folk/traditional and sacred music categories of the Himig Handog Chorale Competition held February 24, 2012.

Competing in the Champions Category, the group bested other prize-winning chorale groups such as the Carillon Glee Club, the Quezon City Performing Arts Children’s Choir, the University of Southeastern Philippines Harmonica Polifonica, Koro del Pilar Children’s Choir of Malolos, Bulacan, the PUP Laboratory High School Choir of Sta. Mesa, Manila, the TIP Choral Society of Cubao, Quezon City, University of Mindanao Tagum College Harmonic Chorale and the League of Young Voices of Tagum City National Comprehensive High School.

The group went home PhP100,000 pesos richer for their twin gold victories.

The Parish of Christ of the Eucharistic King served as the venue for the Sacred Music Category while the competition for the Folk/Traditional Category was held at the Atrium of the New City Hall of Tagum.

Judges in the competition were Indonesia’s Nathaniel Ahimsa, and Agustinus Bambang Jusana along with Mr. Arwin Tan, Mr. Tristan Ignacio, Miss Helen Tejero and Mr. Arnel Lubasan, all of whom are respected in their world of music. (PIA XI/CIO Tagum)
