“More fun for criminals?” Militant Davaoeña solon calls for police action, citizens’ vigilance on Davao crimes
Gabriela Women’s Party Representative Luz Ilagan called for urgent police action and citizens’ vigilance among Davaoeños following the spate of crimes that has created an atmosphere of lawlessness in the city.
“It is extremely alarming. After the tragic death of 23-year old nurse Marjorie Kwan, more and more residents, especially women are being victimized. Many are being robbed, held-up at gun point or dragged by criminals in motorcycles. It seems that no one is safe anymore and many fear for their lives as well as for those of their loved ones,” said Ilagan.
Over the past few weeks, attacks on Davao City residents have escalated. Several teachers, students and workers have reportedly fallen prey to motorcycle-riding criminals who try to snatch bags and personal belongings. A former dean of the Ateneo de Davao University was hurt when she was dragged by a motorcycle-riding snatcher while another professor was held-up at gunpoint at the gate of her house in Central Park Subdivision.
The houses of Davao-based journalists Radyo ng Bayan manager Peng Aliño, TV 5 Davao editor Jeff Tupas and Philippine Daily Inquirer Mindanao bureau chief Nico Alconaba’s were ransacked by still unidentified intruders. On Tuesday night (February 21), at least three students from San Pedro College and Ateneo de Davao were reportedly robbed.
The Gabriela solon, who once served as councilor for Davao City said the police should be taken to task for the resolution of these crimes. “Unless the police authorities immediately move to bring lawless elements behind bars, it will be more fun for criminals in this once-peaceful city.”
