AFP will do beste to help ensure peaceful elections

May. 10, 2007

davao city– 1001st Brigade Commanding General Carlos Holganza vowed to work their best to ensure a peaceful and orderly election.

But Holganza in an interview last Wednesday however said they had monitored election related violent incidents in his area of responsibility particularly in Compostela Valley Province.

The 1001st Brigade covers the area of ComVal , Davao Oriental, portion of Agusan del Sur and Tagum City.

He said that they are closely coordinating with the police forces to make sure of an orderly conduct of the election.

We are coming up with more stringent measures like the putting up of more check points, he said.

He urged the public to bear with them as more check points will be installed. This is one way of checking on individuals with bad intention, he said.

He said they really need to strengthen their efforts.

As far as honest elections are concerned he said that is not their call because the soldiers are only allowed to stay 50 meters away from polling places.

He said they can not touch any election paraphernalia nor ride in vehicles used by those that are tasked to supervise the elections.

That concern is primarily for the Comelec, the teachers, watchers, and the NAMFREL, he said.

He said they will do their part of maintaining peace and order in the area. (PIA XI/prixdbanzon).
