Philippines: Gabriela condemns Jalosjos commutation

Jun. 14, 2007

MANILA — We condemn, in the strongest possible terms, Malacaang’s travesty of the Filipino women’s dignity by commuting Jalosjos’ sentence. This was the statement of Gabriela secretary general Emmi de Jesus on the commutation of prison term of convicted rapist former Congressman Romeo Jalosjos.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ordered the commutation of Jalosjos’ term shortened to 16 years from 40 to 80 years. Malacaang claims the President’s decision was based on health consideration, good conduct and advanced age.

But the militant women’s group believes otherwise. It’s payback time. Jalosjos’ province delivered well for her in the last elections.

Zamboanga del Norte is among the few provinces who delivered a victory for the Team Unity with seven administration candidates landing in the top 12.

President Arroyo is known for coddling and rewarding criminals who serve her administration well. Her administration is full of cheats, thieves and murderers who kept her presidency afloat despite its illegitimacy.

Gabriela was at the forefront of the battle for justice when Jalosjos was accused of raping an 11-year old girl in 1997.

Arroyo can rest assure that the we will not give up on this fight. In the end, for all the crimes she has committed against Filipino women and the people, she might find herself sharing board and lodging amenities with Jalosjos in Muntinlupa, concluded de Jesus.###
