BAY AREA PINOYS CAST THEIR VOTES IN 2007 NATIONAL ELECTIONS

16 April 2007 ? Consul General Maria Rowena Mendoza Sanchez of the Philippine Consulate in San Francisco, California, U.S.A. reported to Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto G. Romulo that the Filipinos in the Bay Area already started to cast their votes for the 2007 Philippine National Elections.

Mr. Antonio Menchavez, a 63-year old Cebu native who is currently a security officer at the Philippine Center building in San Francisco, personally delivered his ballot to the Consulate during the first day of elections, 14 April 2007. This was received by members of the Special Ballot Reception of and Custody Group (SBRCG) including Consul Anthony Mandap, Mr. Cesar Cruz and Mr. John Jiao.

Tomorrow marks the start of the second Overseas Absentee Voting exercise in our country?s history.

We assure our people that after months of extensive preparations in partnership and support of the Commission on Elections, the Foreign Service is ready to serve overseas Filipinos in the conduct of these mid-term elections.

Filipino-Norwegian Beauty Wins Miss Norway-Universe 2007 Title

13 April 2007 ? Philippine Ambassador to Sweden Victoria S. Bataclan reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that 21-year-old Filipino-Norwegian Kirby Ann Basken was crowned Miss Norway-Universe 2007 during the finals of the annual beauty pageant held in the Norwegian capital Oslo on 9 April 2007.

In the presence of Hon. Secretary Arturo D. Brion of the Department of Labour and Employment and H.E. Annika Markovic, Ambassador of Sweden to the Philippines, Mr. Christer Themn?r – Chairman of the foundation will present a reward of SEK 25 000,00 (approx. PhP 170 000,00) and a diploma to Mr. Jesus Sumook in a simple awarding ceremony on Monday, 16 April 2007 at 5:00 p.m. at the Office of the Secretary in Intramuros, Manila.

Philippines: Exempt OFWs from Passport Fee — Pimentel

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Genuine Opposition senatorial candidate Aquilino Pimentel III today proposed that overseas Filipino workers be exempted from the payment of the P700 passport fee to ease their financial burden before going to their foreign destination.

Pimentel said the free passport scheme is privilege that should be extended to the OFWs to reward them for their role in stabilizing the economy in the form of foreign exchange or dollar remittances that have propped up the peso and boosted the country?s international dollar reserves.
