Karlo Nograles, the son of Davao City congressman and staunch Arroyo ally Prospero Nograles, is eyeing a seat in Congress through an OFW partylist group. He maintains that it?s merely by chance that he is the son of Prospero and that he does have a soft spot for OFWs even though he?s not one of them. Some people, however, see his running as just part of the alleged plot to field partylist groups said to have links with Malacanang.

Philippines’s Department of Foreign Affairs Disenfranchise Voters, Sabotage Democracy: Group

The system of embassies and consular offices of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) collects millions of dollars from overseas Filipino workers in the form of passport fees, taxes and other levies on the “disposable” population of the Philippines, a population which is now the mainstay of Filipino economy. With some $19 billion in remittances from Filipinas and Filipinos who work relentlessly, often under intolerable conditions and in unbearable alienation from home, family and community, one would expect the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Philippine Commission on Elections (Comelec) to be most energetic in ensuring that overseas Filipinos are empowered and enabled to participate in the electoral process, that they are provided with the means to have a voice in the choice of Philippine political leadership. Were wealth and resources truly the determinants for influence in Philippine politics ? which is the usual explanation for the enormous influence of landlords, warlords, bosses and corporations ? then, logically, overseas Filipinos would have a significant presence in electoral politics.

Dead Filipino Maid Begins Journey Back Home to Philippines

Community Farewell, Wake Set for Sunday, April 29th

New York ? After weeks of campaigning for a second investigation and Consulate-sponsored repatriation and burial fees, the body of Filipina domestic worker Felisa “Fely” Garcia will be received by her two sons, Garry and Gliff, when they fly to New York City this week to take their mother’s body to be buried in the Philippines. A community farewell and public wake organized by the Philippine Forum and KABALIKAT Domestic Workers Support Network is set for Sunday, April 29th, 4-8pm at the Greenwich Village Funeral Home. A prayer service is scheduled at 5:30 p.m. Garcia’s children as well as community advocates will be in attendance. The event will be open to the public.

Philippines Honors Filipino Veterans in Guam

MANILA –Consul Raquel Solano of the Philippine Consulate General in Agana, Guam reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that the Consulate held a luncheon ceremony in honor of Guam-based Filipino World War II veterans at the Coral Room of the Guam Plaza Hotel on 21 April 2007.
