DAVAO CITY – Urban poor groups in Manila and relatives of victims will commemorate on Friday the 15th year of the landslide in Payatas landfill that claimed more than 300 lives of the urban poor in July 10, 2000.
Incessant rains brought by typhoons Edeng and Ditang caused the collapse of the Payatas dump site killing more than 300 people who scavenge through the trash and who were living in the area.
Carlito Badion, national secretary-general of Kadamay said until now justice remains elusive for the victims of the tragedy.
Residents and relatives will hold a mass at the Dambana ng mga Biktima ng Payatas Tragedy and a protest action in front of the IPM Environmental Services, Inc., which manages the landfill.
Badion said residents are condemning IPM’s expansion of the landfill that dislocates hundreds of families living around the area. (davaotoday.com)
