DAVAO CITY – The annual Lunhaw Awards, which seeks to recognize initiatives that are helpful to the environment, is now accepting applications.
The Lunhaw Award is open to individuals, peoples organizations, schools, small and medium-sized enterprises, and civil society groups in Davao City. Entries will be selected along the following thematic categories: energy and water conservation, marine resource management, green building and urban greening, forest-based initiatives, pollution control, organic agriculture and environmental education/advocacy.
This year, Lunhaw Awards is looking forward to recognizing more exemplary environmental initiatives by Dabawenyos as a result of recent ordinances being implemented by the city government.
Ann Fuertes, executive director of Interface Development Interventions, Inc said: “Since 2013, the city government has implemented a number of new environmental ordinances like the Rainwater Harvesting Ordinance which mandates the construction of rainwater catchment systems (RCS) for new buildings and residences. This year, we hope to recognize successful and best practices of RCS initiatives in residences, communities, schools or business establishments.”
Fuertes said the use of a rainwater catchment system allows households and establishments to reduce wastage of potable water by harvesting rainwater which will be used for domestic or industrial purposes.
“Even the simplest RCS can go a long way towards reducing our human footprint on the environment. Every small initiative that we take in protecting our environment is in fact a larger step towards realizing our collective dream for a Greener and Sustainable Davao City for our children and future generations,” she said.
IDIS is one of the co-organizers of the award which is led by the City Agriculturist’s Office (CAO), the City Environment and Natural Resources (CENRO), the Davao Association of Catholic Schools (DACS) and the Davao City Water District (DCWD).
The application forms are available online at www.idisphil.org/lunhaw-awards or at the offices of the organizers.
Deadline of applications is on February 19. The winners will be announced during the Araw ng Dabaw celebration in March. (davaotoday.com)
