‘Gateway to Kadayawan’

This August, in Davao, Dabawenyos will hold a celebration of flowers, fruits, and for the year’s bountiful harvest – the Kadayawan festival. This celebration is one of the popular traditional festivals in Mindanao, now on its 22nd year.

In time for this gigantic festival, Damosa Gateway will once again mark the city with a series of exciting activities and events, as it commemorates its Second Year Anniversary. Also, Damosa Market Basket invites all entrepreneurs and exhibitors to showcase their best products and join FIESTANG PINOY (Fiesta Bazaar) at Damosa Market Basket, Lanang, Davao City.

As the city announced a shift in the way the annual Kadayawan Festival is celebrated -- that is, for one, showcasing Lumad culture and tradition not for tourism's sake -- tribal leaders remain concerned that the festivities hardly depict the struggle of Mindanao's indigenous peoples to pursue their unique way of life and retain control of their ancestral lands, which have been encroached into by big mining companies and plantations.

Davao director triumphs in France film festival

Sherad Anthony Sanchez, a young filmmaker from Davao City, has won the "First Film" award at the 18th Festival International du Documentaire de Marseille in France for his film Huling Balyan ng Buhi: O Ang Sinalirap Nga Asoy Nila. Another Filipino, Raya Martin, won a "special mention" for the film Autohystoria. Only 21, Sanchez has won other accolades for his first film.
