The Philippine elections: What went wrong, what can be done

DAVAO CITY — Revel Ian Rakasa, a 24-year-old resident of Talomo Proper, spent nearly three hours looking for his name. He hopped from one voting precinct to another, elbowing his way through the throng of equally exasperated voters, their necks growing stiff looking at the pages of papers stapled on walls and blackboards. All to no avail.

Rakasa finally gave up around lunch time, when he was already feeling the pangs of hunger.

Sara Duterte has a mind of her own — Avisado

DAVAO CITY — City Administrator Wendel Avisado has indicated that the next vice mayor of Davao City will not be a political prototype of her father, re-elected Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte.

Referring to Sara Zimmerman Duterte, virtual winner of the recent vice-mayoralty contest in this city of 750,000 registered voters, Avisado said that the young lawyer has a mind of her own.

$120-million bridge to link Samal to Davao

DAVAO CITY — A $120-million bridge will soon connect Davao City and the Island Garden City of Samal, a project that is expected to boost tourism and trade for the two cities.

Public Works and Highways Acting Secretary Manuel Bonoan, together with USEC Rafael Yabut and DPWH XI Director Dimas Soguilon, were here recently to study the proposal for the bridge.
