Virador Urges Scrapping of Intel Funds

?Despite the billions of (intelligence) funds made available since 2001, these have not contributed to maintaining peace or even arresting the violence. Unless, of course, these funds were used to sponsor such violence, which we strongly believe is the case.?

To Joel Virador, the Bayan Muna congressman who represents Mindanao, it?s an idea that makes perfect sense: if the state?s intelligence apparatuses can?t stop criminals from killing political activists, journalists, lawyers, students and church people, why should the Filipino people allow them to continue enjoying their intelligence fund?

In fact, Virador thinks that ?it is very plausible that these government funds are being used by the Arroyo administration to fund operations of death squads to murder Bayan Muna members, leaders and supporters nationwide.?

The solution would be to scrap these ?Confidential and Intelligence (COIN) Funds? immediately, Virador said.

2 Million New Books Expected for Davao Provinces

DAVAO CITY — The Department of Education (DepEd) in Southern Mindanao is expecting the arrival of some two million books to augment the present number of books in the region.

This was bared by Minnie Fabros, DepEd?s spokesperson in the region, who also admitted that the present student-book ratio is still 1:3.

?The supply of books for public school students is still not enough. However, students can look forward to the arrival of 2 million books, although on a staggered basis,? she said.

Killings Tearing Filipino Society Apart: UCCP

The United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP) General Assembly, the highest decision-making body of the UCCP, has adopted a resolution and statement denouncing the deteriorating human-rights condition in the country.

?We are aghast that these killings are happening with such obvious connection and direction.? We must speak the truth and name them appropriately as assassinations/extra-judicial killings,? said Bishop Elmer M. Bolocon, the UCCP general secretary, in a statement.

?Many of our members strongly believe that these killings are being perpetrated by elements of the Philippine National Police and/or Armed Forces of the Philippines,? he said.
