Residents in flood-prone areas urged to follow evac procedure

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – In the aftermath of the evacuation of residents along Talomo River due to heavy rain and flooding, Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio reminds the public to follow the pre-emptive evacuation procedures in flooding situations to ensure their safety.

The mayor gave this advice on her radio program Wednesday, asking the public to follow the announcement of agencies for disaster response to avoid being caught in the flood and waiting to be rescued.

“Some people are still hesitant to evacuate when they don’t see the flood yet,” Mayor Duterte said.

“May we remind everyone that once the City Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) and our Barangay Risk Reduction and Management Office orders a pre-emptive evacuation, we need to implement the pre-emptive evacuation so that we will not reach to the point that we will rescue in areas with a high level of water and flood,” the mayor said.

On Tuesday evening, around 600 persons living along river banks of Talomo had been evacuated to Our Lady of Lourdes Parish on orders of the CRRMO after an overflow of tributaries in Talomo River along Barangay Balengaeng.

Heavy rainfall caused by low pressure area caused the Talomo River to overflow.

Among the affected barangays near Talomo River are Talomo Proper, Los Amigos, Catalunan Pequeño, Tugbok, and Riverside. (davaotoday.com)
