DAVAO CITY — The City Social Services and Development Office (CSSDO) reported that a total of 396 families lost their homes after a massive fire gutted a portion of the wet market in Barangay Bankerohan last Friday, April 15 at 4:00 pm.

Liwayway Caligdong, assistant department head of CSSDO announced that the Bankerohan fire affected 237 houses in Purok 3, Purok 4 and Purok 5 of Barangay 5-A.

Caligdong said that as of 7:00 PM Sunday, April 17, the total damaged houses  reached 229 and the partially damaged houses were eight.

“Most of the families are now settling at the Barangay 5-A Gymnasium and some are staying in their relatives or friends, but there are some families who don’t want to live the burned areas,” she said.

Caligdong said that CSSDO distributed beddings, food assistance and some cooking material to the fire victims and on Saturday they conducted a community cooking.

As of now, the CSSDO does not have the exact figure of the total estimated cost of the damage.

“I think we will know the total estimated damage after three days,” Caligdong said.

The CSSDO will provide P10,000 for homeowners, P5,000 for the sharers and partially damaged and P3,000 for the renters.

Caligdong said that there is a possibility that they will get their fund from the emergency fund of the City Mayor since they do not have enough budget because of the series of fire incidents last March.

As of today, there is still no update on the source of explosion that caused the massive fire in the area.(davaotoday.com)
