NUPL on the reported suggestion to detain Palparan at the AFP HQ

On the reported suggestion of Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo that Ret. Maj. Gen. Jovito Palparan should be temporarily detained at the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) headquarters, Atty. Edre Olalia, National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers (NUPL) secretary general, said:
Shameful. Outrageous. Absurd and absolutely unacceptable.

There is no cogent legal or credible factual basis for the ‘suggestion’ that Palparan should be brought to the AFP headquarters when he is arrested or surrenders. This will ignite and inflame so much valid criticism, condemnation and protest both here and abroad.

Palparan will be laughing , smirking and walking with a swagger inside his very ‘home.’ That would certainly be the height of hypocrisy and double standard of justice in our society. It will completely take away any trust in the present government in this regard.

We ask them, please don’t insult and victimize the victims and their families twice over and invite their righteous wrath. Throw him the book and leave the lawyering to his army of lawyers.”
