Philippines: 4 Injured Seafares in Australia Safe

MANILA — Consul General Maria Theresa P. Lazaro of the Philippine Consulate General in Sydney, Australia reported to Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto G. Romulo that the four injured Filipino seafarers of the bulk carrier Shirane are confirmed safe based on the information gathered from the John Hunter Hospital, the Royal North Shore Hospital (Burns Unit), and the NYK Line Australia.

3rd Engineer Stanley Ugnit, who appeared to have sustained more injuries than the three others, is in a stable condition at the Royal North Shore Hospital (Burns Unit). He is expected to be released from the Hospital after 10 April 2007.

Chief Engineer Pablito A. Gloriani, 2nd Engineer Raymond P. Loares and Ftr Arnelito H. Mabilangan, who were initially confined at the John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, were brought to the Royal North Shore Hospital (Burns Unit) today for check-ups.

Chief Engineer Gloriani had returned to the vessel to continue his work, while 2nd Engineer Loares and Ftr Mabilangan were cleared by the hospital to be repatriated to the Philippines.

NYK Line Australia is currently arranging the immediate repatriation of 2nd Engineer Loares and Ftr Mabilangan. (pr/dfa)
