FILIPINO SEAMAN DIED IN ACCIDENT AT SEA IN GREECE

7 April 2007The Philippine Embassy in Athens Officer-in-Charge Eleanor Jaucian has reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that a Filipino sailor died in an accident at sea last Friday off Corfu Island, northwest of Athens.

The accident occurred during a rescue drill on board the cruise liner Astoria. The Filipino seaman, whose identity is being withheld pending notification to his next of kin, was thrown off board when a lifeboat harness snapped causing the lifeboat to dangle on the side of the ship.

Two other sailors, both Ukrainians, were reported injured.

The embassy has yet to receive confirmation from port police whether another Filipino seaman was injured in the accident, as an earlier news flash indicated.

Philippine Labor Attache Jaime Jimenez, who is based in Cyprus, has been tasked to coordinate with Passat Shipping Management, the manning agent of the Bahamas-flagged Astoria. END
