NPA Extortion Must Be Stopped Senga

Jun. 24, 2006

DAVAO CITY The alleged extortion by the New Peoples Army (NPAs) must be stopped by increasing pressure and keeping them on the run, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief Gen. Generoso Senga saidon Friday.

Senga said the operations against insurgents need to be intensified to carry out the administrations goal of spurring progress and development through law enforcement, social justice and economic improvement.

The administration is aware of the root causes of the insurgency problem and the all-out campaign against the Communists is actually part of the overall approach to address poverty, especially in the countryside, he said.

The negotiating table has always been open even though the CPA-NPAs showed no interest at all to sit in it, foisting the absurd precondition of lifting the terrorist tag placed on the NPA by the United States and the European Union, which the Philippine government cannot do anything about, Senga said.

The government is on the right track in its effort to institute political and economic reforms and that the Administration will not allow any terrorist group to sabotage what has been built, he said. (Philippine Information Agency)
