MANILA — We are all aware of the many high profile incidents of election related violence and harassment. Since November, our electoral watch dog partner, COMPACT, has been compiling information ? to date, over 100 killed, about as many injured. All this violence perpetrated with the intent to either grab power or retain it by politicians that wish only to “serve the people”.

Philippines: As election campaign endS, Beltran says gov’t reneged on release promise to IPU

MANILA — As the electoral campaign for the May 14 polls draws to a close, Anakpawis Representative and political detainee Crispin Beltran said that there is no longer any doubt that the Macapagal-Arroyo administration made sure that he was not released to ensure that he would not be able to help campaign for his party-list Anakpawis. He said that it was also becoming clear that the government is reneging on its promise to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) that it will not make any opposition to legal moves for his release.

MANILA — Genuine Opposition senatorial candidate Aquilino Pimentel III today said volunteer watchers and monitors in non-government organizations who will render poll duties should possess not only the courage and determination but also the basic know how on how to detect, report and foil cheating in elections.
