Philippines: Anti-fraud group pooh-poohs military covenant on honest polls

MANILA — The anti-fraud group Kontra Daya said it was skeptical of the covenant signing between poll watch groups and the Armed Forces of the Philippines National Capital Region Command, saying that this was a mere publicity stunt of the military.

The poll watchdog held an ecumenical service and candle lighting activity at the Plaza Roma in front of the Commission on Elections office in Intramuros, Manila. The group called on the public to remain vigilant as moves to undermine the credibility of the elections persist.

Comelec should not stand by as Philippines’s party-list system is manipulated, bastardized — Beltran

MANILA — Anakpawis Representative and political detainee Crispin Beltran today said that the Commission on Elections is being bureaucratic when it justifies its refusal to investigate the allegations that the Arroyo government is funding several party-lists running in the May 14 elections by saying that no one has filed any official complaint.

Philippines: Gabriela Gives Comelec Copy of Partylist Memo, Urges Probe

MANILA — Gabriela Women?s Party members today trooped to the Commission on Elections office to give copies of the confidential memo to COMELEC Chairperson Benjamin Abalos while urging the body to conduct a speedy investigation on the alleged hatchet plot using public funds against progressive partylists.

hedging can account for the issues surrounding
the palace memo detailing how public funds are to
be used in building up partylist groups that are
pro-administration and at the same time aimed
at dislodging progressive partylist groups from having seats in Congress.
