Teresita Edir, a pushcart vendor in Agdao market, and her children join a recent march organized by the group Kadamay demanding the ouster of President Arroyo. Edir complains that her earnings could hardly buy a kilo of rice. “In Erap’s time, we could buy rice at P10 a kilo,” she recalls the time of former President Joseph Estrada. “Now, rice is P18 per kilo under Gloria! The US FDA defines aflatoxin as toxic compounds produced by certain strains of the aspergillus fungus; it is toxic and carcinogenic. Exposure to high level of aflatoxin, according to the DOST, produces acute necrosis or tissue death, as well as cirrhosis and carcinoma of the liver.

Exports of Philippine-grown bananas and pineapples, most of them from the Davao region and other parts of Mindanao, may increase with the implementation of the Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement (JPEPA), but it will benefit agribusiness transnational corporations and not Filipino growers, according to independent think-tank Ibon Foundation.
