Mothers, kids bewail high price of rice

Teresita Edir, a pushcart vendor in Agdao market, and her children join a recent march organized by the group Kadamay demanding the ouster of President Arroyo. Edir complains that her earnings could hardly buy a kilo of rice. "In Erap's time, we could buy rice at P10 a kilo," she recalls the time of former President Joseph Estrada. "Now, rice is P18 per kilo under Gloria! With a president like her, life only gets harder. She's corrupt and she has not done anything to alleviate the situation of poor." Disease-causing toxin found in Davao, Gensan rice

The US FDA defines aflatoxin as toxic compounds produced by certain strains of the aspergillus fungus; it is toxic and carcinogenic. Exposure to high level of aflatoxin, according to the DOST, produces acute necrosis or tissue death, as well as cirrhosis and carcinoma of the liver.
