Philippines: Labor dept to create Maritime Office

MANILA– To speed up assistance to the maritime industry particularly in addressing the concerns for Filipino seafarers, Labor and Employment Secretary Arturo D. Brion is set to create a maritime office under his direct supervision.

Brion said that the Maritime Office will be manned by a full time maritime officer, LCDR Eustacio Nimrod Enriquez who is currently serving as Deputy Executive Director of the National Maritime Polytechnic (NMP) in Tacloban.

Philippines: Unless govt did something, beheaded OFW was certain of his death

MANHILA — OFW Reynaldo Cortez, 41 years old, was beheaded this morning in Saudi Arabia for the alleged murder of a Pakistani driver in May 2002. His execution comes in the midst of the Philippine government?s Migrants Month this June.

Filipino hostage released in Nigeria

12 June 2007 ? Philippine Ambassador to Nigeria Masaranga R. Umpa reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that the Filipino seafarer seized by unnamed militants in Bayelsa State, Nigeria on 25 May 2007 was released on the evening of 11 June (Nigeria time) to Nigerian authorities and is now undergoing medical examinations.
