Lawmaker wants probe on gov’t liability after Valenzuela fire

May. 15, 2015

DAVAO CITY – Militant lawmaker Neri Colmenares of Bayan Muna Partylist said the House Committee on Labor should probe the liability of government agencies following the fire that razed a factory of slippers in Valenzuela on Wednesday.

The probe on May 20 will investigate the occupational safety mechanism of Kentex Manufacturing.

Colmenares said the Congress should also look on the liability of the Department of Labor and Employment and the administration “for allowing like-structured factories to proliferate in the country”.

“The Bureau of Fire Prevention should also be summoned to the hearing because structures like the Kentex factory dealing with highly combustible materials should have higher fire safety standards,” Colmenares added.

Colmenares also said that damages should be paid to the families. At least 72 people died during the incident.
