NPA ransacks armory of Monkayo mayor’s residence

DAVAO CITY – Suspected New People’s Army guerrillas swooped down on the mining town of Monkayo in Compostela Valley on Tuesday and ransacked the armory of the residence of Mayor Joselito B. Brillantes.

The mayor’s residence is located at Purok 7, Barangay Olaycon.

Colonel Romeo S. Brawner, spokesperson of the Armed Forces’ Eastern Mindanao Command said in a statement that an undetermined number of NPAs carted away “eight high powered firearms at 10:30 pm of April 14.”

The mayor’s security guard, identified as Roberto Baysa, died in the five-minute attack, Brawner said.

Earlier at 10:20 pm, another group of NPAs attacked the patrol base of Alpha Company of the 25th Infantry Battalion in Barangay Banlag of the same town.

A member of the Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (Cafgu) died during the attack. Brawner said there is also an undetermined number of casualties on the NPA’s side.

Lt. Col. Michele B. Anayron, commander of the 25th IB, said that the NPAs also conducted road blocks by positioning a 10-wheeler truck, and five other civilian trucks horizontally along the national highway of Bankerohan Sur, Montevista and Barangays Olaycon and Banlag both of Monkayo.
