Consumer groups belonging to #StrikeTheHike Network will hold a week-long protest against the plan to increase the fare of the Metro South Commuter Line of the Philippine National Railway (PNR) from P10 to P15 starting Tuesday.
The PNR operates between Tutuban, Manila and Calamba, Laguna. According to PNR Board Resolution 094-2014, the minimum fare will increase to P15 from P10 while the maximum rate will increase from P45 to P60. The fare increase was supposed to be implemented starting January 5, 2014 but was deferred amid public opposition.
The group said the plan to implement the fare hike is “not for developing and upgrading its services but to pay for its debts.”
The groups see the fare hike as unjustifiable because of the PNR’s poor type of services.
