DAVAO CITY – The Gabriela Women’s Party called on the House leadership to take the cue from Pope Francis to take a second look on the divorce bill.

Gabriela Women’s Representative Emmi De Jesus said Congress should consider the Pope’s approval on marital separation and pass the said bill.

Pope Francis recently addressed the audience in St. Peter’s Square and said separation is “inevitable” or “morally necessary”.

“Not all separated spouses are able to revive their troubled marriages and there are cases where the weaker spouse or young children should be protected from serious injuries caused by arrogance and violence, humiliation, exploitation and indifference,” Pope Francis said.

De Jesus also said that they should view it as a compassionate anti-violence measure to protect women and children from any form of abuse, even husbands that suffer from inevitable damaged marriages.

Rep. Luz Ilagan, also called the Pope’s statement ” a grounded appreciation of the reality that many married couples face”.

Gabriela also said that with the side of the Roman Catholic hierarchy, the congressmen should not fear in passing the divorce law.

Gabriela filed a divorce bill in the 14th, 15th and 16th Congresses and said that the changing currents in the attitudes of the Roman Catholic hierarchy “should signal to the House leadership that macho congressmen need not fear passing the divorce law.” (davaotoday.com)
