DAVAO CITY – Lawyers handling the case of overseas Filipino worker Mary Jane Veloso said there is still no development on her indefinite reprieve.
“It’s still status quo. Talk of her being possibly executed soon is a product of normal apprehension because the holy Ramadan ends next week and new executions reportedly may be scheduled in general,” said Atty. Edre U. Olalia, secretary general of the National Union of People’s Lawyers.
“But there is presently no A1 news, report or information either way on her indefinite reprieve even as there are conflicting information going around,” Olalia said.
Olalia said their counterpart Indonesian lawyers “say there is no significant update yet.”
Veloso was convicted for drug trafficking in Indonesia and was put to death row in April. Indonesian Joko Widodo granted Veloso reprieve during the last minute after protest actions by supporters appealed to spare the life of the OFW who was duped by an illegal recruiter.
Meanwhile, an Indonesian women’s group has recently visited Veloso.
World boxing icon Manny Pacquiao, who heads the House committee on Migrant workers is slated to see her too on Friday if given the privilege, Olalia said.
“A Nueva Ecija court has just junked illegal recruiter Sergio’s move to dismiss the cases filed by the other victims of her nefarious scheme of human trafficking. The Justice Department reportedly said a resolution of Mary Jane and family’s complaints for illegal recruitment, human trafficking and swindling is forthcoming maybe this week,” he said.(davaotoday.com)
