European Journalists Urge Bulgaria to Charge Police Who Assaulted Photographer

The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), the regional group of the International Federation of Journalists, today condemned the brutal attack by police officers on Emil Ivanov, a well-known Bulgarian photojournalist who was assaulted as he was covering a criminal hearing at the National Palace of Justice in Sofia.

Nepal: US Offer to Resettle Bhutanese Refugees Sparks Tensions

Refugees Have Right of Return, but Should Be Free to Choose Other Options

(Kathmandu, May 17, 2007) ? A US offer to resettle 60,000 Bhutanese
refugees has given hope to many of the 106,000 refugees living in Nepal
for more than 16 years, but has also heightened tensions in the camps,
Human Rights Watch said in a report released today. Refugees who insist
on repatriation as the only acceptable solution have been threatening and
intimidating those who voice support for resettlement in the US.

IFJ Calls on Sudan to Release Two Journalists Held On Defamation Charges

The International Federation of Journalist (IFJ) today called on the Government of Sudan to release two imprisoned journalists and reopen their newspaper Al-Sudani after a defamation complaint by the Justice Minister shut down the paper and put the editor and a columnist in jail.

Two poll watchers for the Kabataan Party-list were abducted and killed in Capalonga, Camarines Norte.

Based on the party?s press release, Jun Bagasbas, 20, of Ulipanan Jose Panganiban, and Ronilo Vallevare, 16, of Brgy. Old Camp Capalonga, both Kabataan organizers and poll watchers, were allegedly abducted by suspected soldiers on May 15.

UN mandate a recognition of Philippines’s ’sincere efforts’ to address human rights — Arroyo
