Two decades of unwavering struggle for peoples’ rights of Lourdes Rubrico, the abducted urban poor leader in Dasmari?as who surfaced seven days after her captors freed her in the middle of the night in a shopping mall of the said municipality, made her what she is today after she decided to go after her abductors by filing a criminal and administrative suit today at 11 o’ clock in the morning before the Office of the Ombudsman in Quezon City.

Philippines journalist killed, another wounded in separate shootings

New York ?The Committee to Protect Journalists calls on the Philippine government to ensure prompt and thorough investigations into two separate shootings this week, one of which took the life of radio reporter Carmelo Palacios. Police have assigned the cases to a special task force that investigates attacks on journalists.

Another Dark Period for Press Freedom in Philippines

MANILA — This week marks another dark period for press freedom in the Philippines, with the murder of a colleague, the attempted murder of another and a libel case filed by a governor against yet another.

Carmelo Palacios, 41, field reporter of the government-run Radyo ng Bayan, was found dead in Sta. Rosa town, Nueva Ecija, Wednesday morning, his body battered and shot in the chin. He was the 51st journalist to be killed under the Arroyo administration’s increasingly blood-drenched watch, and the third this year.
