DAVAO CITY – A new network of government and private organizations here has been created to monitor cases of abuse and violence against women and to give interventions to victims.
City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte signed on March 12 Executive Order Number 6 Series of 2015, “An Order Creating a Coordinating Council Towards the Insitutionalizing of Womyn Network to Monitor Cases of Abuse and Violence Against Women (VAW) and for Psycho-spiritual, Psycho-Social Intervention.”
Under the EO, a coordinating council will be created under the leadership of the mayor and shall included local government units and non-government organizations and people’s organizations.
The coordinating council will perform functions such as formulation of legislation, monitoring, referral, rescue, and information and education campaigns.
The City Social Services and Development Office (CSSDO) shall serve as secretariat to the council.
The EO said that cases of VAW continue to rise “and manifest in various forms which disrupts family and intimate relationships.”
“Davao City is not spared by the fact that indeed VAW cases have been reported to local authorities” and courts.
It said “these increasing case of VAW in the country today is attributed to varied socio-economic problems of individual persons and society in general.”
The EO said that the City Mayor supposedly created a “Task Force Monitor” in 1998.
However, the EO said that “despite the intervention, the City Government of Davao still recognizes the need for a mechanism of collaboration, consultation and coordination” in the implementation of advocacy programs and monitoring women’s ad gender development concerns. (davaotoday.com)
