Parago blames government for the slaughter of kin

Family Kin turned Military Agent

The NPA’s May 26 statement, however, detailed Evelyn’s involvement in military intelligence since 1998, when a “national plan” to capture his brother Parago was hatched by the AFP.

“During the raid by the Military Intelligence Group (MIG) Commander Colonel Palabrica in the residence of Ka Parago’s family in November 1999, Evelyn Pitao and her live-in partner relayed accurate information on the exact whereabouts of her brother, the emailed statement said. This resulted to the capture of Ka Parago.

Evelyns live-in partner, a former NPA guerrilla turned MIG asset, was killed by the NPA in 2001.

According to the NPAs statement, the NPA was already looking into the extent of Evelyn’s cooperation with the enemy at that time of her live-in partners execution but the investigation was deferred.

In 2006, the MIG was able to renew its link with Evelyn, recruiting her first as an intelligence asset and later as an intelligence agent whose principal task was to track down her brother Parago and former husband, Ka Emong.

The NPA said that in 2007 and 2008, Evelyn pinpointed the whereabouts of her brother Danilo whom the MIG targeted for surveillance. According to the NPA statement, the military believed that Danilo was in constant touch with Parago.

But after failing to extract valuable information from Danilo who had no links with the revolutionary movement in the first place, the Military Intelligence Battalion (MIB) of the 10th Infantry Division-Eastern Mindanao Command-AFP killed Danilo on June 2008 in Tagum City, the NPA statement said.

According to the NPA, Evelyn did a vital intelligence task for the AFP in its covert operations against her brother Ka Parago and ex-husband Ka Emong.

She provided the MIG and the MIB accurate information that led to the capture of her ex-husband in January 2009. Emong was on a medical leave and was staying at the house of their eldest daughter in Panabo City when he was arrested by the military.
Sanchez said the NPA resumed its investigation on Evelyn Pitao after the capture of Ka Emong.

The NPAs “people’s court ordered Evelyn’s arrest on February 2009. Evelyn and several others involved the killing of Danilo and the capture of Emong and Parago were tried “in absentia” in the peoples court and proven “guilty beyond reasonable doubt.” Evelyn was one of those meted with the death penalty. Sanchez said the decision was upheld by higher CPP leadership.
