MANILA — Chief Justice Reynato S. Puno and his family thanked those who sympathized with and comforted them days after their mother Narcisa, 92, passed away at the Philippine Heart Center in Quezon City last April 25.
The Puno and the Serrano families would like to thank, in public and in print, all who comforted us in our days of distress; all who gave us peace in our hours of disquiet; and all who gave us their shoulders in our times of weeping. We cannot exhaust this long list of friends from the highest official of the land, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, to the plainest of our friends; those who, from Day 1, voluntarily took care of all the little things without which it was impossible to cope up with our big grief; those who laboriously prepared the church and its vicinity to accommodate our thousands of daily well wishers; those who prepared the refreshments to attend to our physical necessities; and above all, the pastors, the deaconesses, the lay people, and the church workers who attended to our spiritual nourishment all throughout our vigil. Thank you for the fragrance of the flowers whose perfect beauty is the best evidence of a perfect God. Thank you for the spirit-filled music of the spheres that gave wings to our soul to soar to high heavens; thank you for the smiles that assured us God is in control; thank you for your silent presence, for even your silence is the loudest communication of your love, indeed, silence is the language of the heart. Like us, they who have grappled with grief, will tell you there is an arithmetic in friendship friendship multiplies joy, divides grief, and subtracts sorrow, said the chief magistrate during the last rites for his mother at the Puno United Methodist Church in Quezon City last April 29. Mrs. Puno was later interred at the Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina City.
In the same speech, Chief Justice Puno admitted that given the universe of her virtues, it is difficult to pay tribute to a mother, who is Gods best gift. Mother is Gods best reason why He allows life in this imperfect world to go on.
However, despite the urge to hold on to their familys priceless possession, he said they will let her go for she herself has taught us that the love we give away is the only love that we can keep that love is our Mama and willingly, with thanksgiving, with gratefulness, we shall now give Mama to the Lord, for only in that way can we keep Mama eternally in our hearts.
