50 FILIPINO SAILORS SERVING ON CRUISE LINER THAT SUNK IN GREECE SAFE

7 April 2007 The Philippine Embassy in Athens Officer-in-Charge Eleanor Jaucian has reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that all the 50 Filipino sailors serving on the cruise liner Sea Diamond, which sank in Greece last Friday, are safe.

The Filipino sailors were rescued and brought to Piraeus Port outside Athens soon after the incident. They are now on board the cruise liner Emerald docked in Perama Port.

Labor Attache George Eduvalo of the Philippine Embassy in Athens visited the Filipino sailors last Friday night and found all of them in good physical condition.

The embassy keeps contact with the Filipino seamen through sailor Ariel Temperatura, who acts as their interpreter and spokesman. All the 50 Filipino seamen, according to him, were members of the Sea Diamonds hotel and technical crew.

The Sea Diamond, owned by Louis Cruise Lines, a Cypriot company, sank near the Port of Santorini in Southeastern Greece after hitting a rock in the early morning of Friday.

C F Sharp Shipping Agency, the Philippine manning agent of the Sea Diamond, has notified the respective families of the Filipino sailors. END
