May. 25, 2007

MANILA — After being greeted by protests in Japan, Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is again set to be welcomed by protesters this time in Melbourne, Australia.

A mass action is set on May 31, 2007 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, 123 Collins Street, Melbourne. The activity will be led by Migrante Melbourne, Philippine-Australia Solidarity Association and the Australia-Asia Workers Links. The protest will center on the issues of extrajudicial killings and repression in the Philippines. (Attached is the flyer for the protest action).

A flyer for the protest action said that the event would be a “peaceful protests.”

“No matter where she goes, the issue of political killings will always come up because these remain largely unresolved and have continued to claim the lives of activists even during the election period,” said Bayan secretary general Renato M. Reyes, Jr.

“We welcome the positive inquiries of the countries that are concerned with the human rights situation in the Philippines,” he added.
