DAVAO DEL NORTE, Philippines—The New People’s Army Valentin Palamine Regional Operations Command said that it torched several facilities of Sumifru Corporation in South Cotabato because of “unjust labor practices.”

Ka Dencio Madrigal, spokesperson of the NPA’s VPROC Far South Mindanao Region, said on Tuesday, October 10 that communist rebels raided the Japanese-owned plantation located in Sityo Lakag, Brgy. New Dumangas, T’boli, South Cotabato last October 2.

Madrigal said the raid was a “punitive action” against the company also because of “its persistent land grabbing and environmental destructions.”

The raid was carried out by the Neptune Unit of the Mt. Musa Subregional Operations Command of the NPA-FSMR, he added.

The communist rebels seized two 9mm handguns, two shotguns, and two handheld radios from the security guards on duty.

Sumifrus’ container van, two tanker trucks, a packing plant and a warehouse building were also destroyed, causing a total of P6,000,000 damaged to properties, the NPA spokesperson said.(davaotoday.com)
