Environment Groups Grade Philippines’s Senate Bets from Green? to ?Grey?

MANILA ? Greenpeace, EcoWaste Coalition, and Kaisampalad
today announced the results of their 2007 Green Electoral Initiative
(GEI) in a press conference in Quezon City. The GEI, launched last March
5, assessed the ?greenness? of senatorial aspirants based on their
stance and track record on key environmental issues.

Philippines: Gabriela Bares Gov’t Plan Against Progressive Party List Groups

MANILA — “There is a grand scheme to prevent our party list from winning and/or adding more seats in Congress and Malaca?ang’s dirty hands are behind it. This is the biggest travesty of the partylist system.”

This was the statement of Rep. Liza Maza of Gabriela Women’s Party during a press conference this morning exposing an alleged campaign plan against Gabriela, Bayan Muna, Anakpawis, Kabataan, Suara Bangsamoro and other partylists.

Partylist Frontrunners Ask Comelec: Uphold Due Process in Disqualification Case

Election 2007: Nearly 500 Villages in Davao Region Vulnerable to Violence

DAVAO CITY — As many as 444 barangays (villages) in the Southern Mindanao region have been classified as among so-called “areas of immediate concern” this election season.

The police in the region reported 38 percent of the villages in Southern Mindanao, including those in three cities and 44 municipalities, are affected by armed and election-related threats.

Youths Constitute 30% of Voters in Philippines

DAVAO CITY — Up to 30 percent of voters in the forthcoming May 14 elections will come from the youth sector, according to the second issue of the State of the Philippine Population Report (SPPR).

Commission on Population (Popcom) XI Director Maduh Damsani said parents and elders should prepare the youths to make good choices.
